William B. Jr. Retired Captain with the Elmira Police Dept. and Manager of Birnie Transportation in Corning Age 53 of 210 Meadowlark Road Horseheads, NY passed away on Saturday, August 19, 2000 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester,,NY after a brief illness. Bill was born March 2, 1947 in Brooklyn, NY the son of the late William B. and Catherine C. Wikelaitis O'Brien. He was a graduate of Horseheads High School Class of 1966. Bill married his wife, Sharon E. Wood O'Brien, on May 4, 1968 and they recently celebrated their 32nd Wedding Anniversary on May 4, 2000. Bill was a graduate of the F.B.I. National Academy in 1981. He received his Bachelor's Degree from Elmira College and also received his Master's Degree in Education from Elmira College. Bill was a member of the Elmira Police Department for several years and retired in 1992 with the rank of Captain. He continued his career in law enforcement when he became Undersheriff with the Chemung County Sheriff's Dept. in January of 1994. Bill was presently employed as manager of Birnie Transportation in Corning, NY. Bill was a communicant of St. Mary Our Mother Church in Horseheads, a member of the Elmira P.B.A., the Horseheads Elks Lodge #2297, the A.O.H. Msgr. John J. Lee Division in Elmira, as well as a member of several community organizations. Bill was pre-deceased by his father, William B. O'Brien, on September 4, 1966 and his mother, Catherine C. Wikelaitis O'Brien, on January 18, 1998. Bill was pre-deceased by his son William B. O'Brien III on June 7, 1992. He was also pre-deceased by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Orrin S. and Betty J. Rogers Wood Jr. Bill is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Sharon E. Wood O'Brien; daughter and son-in-law, Amy L. O'Brien-Lumbard and Scott Lumbard of Horseheads, NY; grandchildren, Patrick W. Lumbard and Alyssa C. Lumbard both of Horseheads, NY; brother and sister-in-law, Daniel F. & Donna O'Brien of Big Flats, NY; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, David & Marilyn Wood of Horseheads, NY and Steven and Vickie Wood of Oakridge, NC; nieces and nephews, Shannon L. O'Brien McInerney & Patrick McInerney, Jennifer A. O'Brien, Michael Wood and fiance Brandy Mumley, Brenda Wood Clement & Jeremy Clement, Jaime Wood, Ashley Wood, and Andrew Wood; God-Mother, Geraldine Henehan; several grand nieces, grand nephews, cousins, and a multitude of friends. Relatives and friends are invited to call at the Van Buskirk - Lynch Funeral Home Mill St. & Grand Central Ave. Horseheads, NY on Tuesday August 22, 2000 from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. Bill's Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Thomas W. Burr on Wednesday August 23, 2000 at 10 AM in St. Mary Our Mother Church 816 W. Broad St. & Westinghouse Rd. Horseheads, NY. Interment in Maple Grove Cemetery in Horseheads, NY. Flowers are acceptable and the family also requests that people remember Bill through acts of kindness to their fellow man and consider becoming an organ donor in the future.
