Tom was a Marine veteran who served as an Embassy guard in Iceland when President Ronald Reagan met with Gorbachev there. Tom is known as the Marine guard who held his salute long until Reagan caught his eye and returned the salute crisply. Tom was active in veterans affairs in Northwest Louisiana. Sadly, he suffered from depression and took his own life the day after Memorial Day. His memorial service was held at Lowe-McFarlane American Legion Post 14 in Shreveport. He was cremated and his ashes were scattered in Cross Lake, on whose south side the post sits.
