Abiel, second son & 3rd child of Richard & his wife Abigail (Wright) Chamberlin, born 11/22/1739; when seventeen years of age, was captured by the Indians & held in captivity several months; serviced in the French & Indian war with his father, in Capt. In the winter of 1775-6, he was one of the men who went with Capt. Johnson to mark out a road from Newbury, VT., to St. Johns, Province Quebec. On reaching the latter place he went on, says Johnson, & joined the army at Quebec. He was in Capt. John G. He was a grantee of Newbury, VT., & settled on the upper meadow near the river. His name is on a list recorded as heads of families there in 1770. Married, 3/27/1769, Elinor, daughter of Elihu Johnson, who, after his death, married Ezra Gates & died 9/24/1822, aged 69 years. Mr. Chamberlin died 5/14/1787. One paragraph in Wells' History of Newbury, VT., reads: -

"Watches were brought into town before clocks, & came with the first settlers. Col. Kent's diary mentions selling a watch to Abiel Chamberlin in 3/1763. The watches of those days were called 'Bulls Eyes' & had two cases, an outer & an inner case, which were detachable".

His headstone has deteriorated much since you had taken your picture. I was there Aug. 10, 2011, you can no longer read the bottom clearly.
