WINNEBAGO, Neb. - Walter C. "Cody" John (Hoksida Shug Ya Mani) 78, of Winnebago died Thursday, Dec. 24, 1998, at a South Sioux City nursing home following a brief illness.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the gymnasium in Santee, Neb., with the Rev. David P. Hussey, vicar of Blessed Redeemer Episcopal Church in Howe Creek, Neb., officiating. Burial will be in Howe Creek Cemetery, with military rites conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars David Frazier Post of Santee. Visitation will be today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. today, at St. Paul's Indian Mission in Sioux City. Visitation will resume at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the gymnasium in Santee, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Arrangements are under the direction of Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel in Sioux City.
Mr. John was born Feb. 4, 1920, in Niobrara, Neb., the son of Charles and Esther (Wolfe) John. He attended Marty Mission Indian School. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, stationed in New Guinea and the Phillipines. He was a Dakota code talker with the 1st Calvary Division, 302nd Reconnaissance Platoon under General Swift.
He married Myrtle Lucy Redwing in 1940. He married Esther St. Cyr on April 3, 1963. She died April 26, 1993.
He was employed with Armours Packing, Cudahays Packing and Strange Brothers.
He was a member of AFL-CIO, Blessed Redeemer of Howe Creek, Veterans of Foreign Wars David Frazier Post of Santee and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 15028 of Nebraska.
Survivors include four sons and their wives, Edmond and Naomi of Mesa, Ariz., Walter and Jewel and Michael Sr. and Wanda, all of Sioux City and Lonny Sr. and Germaine of Santee; two daughters, Yvonne Reinhart and Agnes Blackhawk, both of Winnebago; a sister and her husband, Julia and Emil Goodteacher of Santee; 38 grandchildren; and 42 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife; three brothers, Homer, Phillip and Gerald; a sister, Clara John Denney; a daughter, Delores; a son, Walter; and a granddaughter.
Pallbearers will be Lonny Jr, Carlos, Orlando, Michael Jr. and Matthew John, Roland Warner, Anthony Yellowbank and Seymour Brandt.
