Convicted Criminal. Bonnie Emily Heady received notoriety after kidnapping 6-year-old Robert Cosgrove Greenlease Jr, the son of a wealthy Kansas City Missouri businessman, on September 28, 1953. The boy was kidnapped from his private school. Her boyfriend, Carl Austin Hall, shot and killed Bobby Greenlease, before they collected a $600,000 ransom, which was the largest sum of money given for a ransom until 1972. On November 19, 1953 after being arrested, the couple entered guilty pleas in federal court. After an hour of deliberations, a jury sentenced them to the death penalty. The trial had a heavy national newspaper coverage. Eighty-one days after the crime, Bonnie Heady and Carl Hall were executed together in the gas chamber of the Missouri State Penitentiary in Jefferson City, Missouri. Less than half of the ransom money was recovered.
