Herman ‘Ike' Schessler, 91, died peaceful after a long illness at the Deaconess Hospital on June 21, 2000 with his family present at his side. He was born in Park City in 1908 and was the youngest son of Elizabeth (Benner) and Henry Schessler, Sr. He was schooled in Park City and attended the University of Minnesota.
Ike married Lois Price of Laurel on Sept. 18, 1930. Lois preceded him in death in 1992.
In his early years he operated the Laurel Ice Plant with his father and hauled coal. In the 1940's he started an excavation business and expanded into sand and gravel. This is the 50th anniversary of the Schessler Ready Mix business, now in it's third generation as the Schessler family business.
Ike was Past Master of the Laurel Corinthian Masonic Lodge, Past Patron of Laurel Zidonian Chapter Order of Eastern Star, a 33rd Degree Scottish Rite Mason and a member of the Chanters in the Al Bedoo Shrine in Billings. He also served as president of the Laurel Rotary Club.
Ike was one of the first to start the Laurel Golf Course. He was very community minded in Laurel and worked hard to help new start-up businesses for the betterment of the community.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and a sister. He was a devoted husband, father and brother and will be greatly missed. He is survived by a sister, Elizabeth Zoppelli, two sons, Don and Bob, five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial Services were Tuesday., June 27, at Laurel United Methodist Church. Interment with Masonic Rites was conducted in the Laurel Cemetery, followed by a gathering at the Methodist Church. Smith Funeral Chapel-Laurel was in charge of arrangements.
Contributions may be given to the Laurel United Methodist Church, Corinthian Lodge No. 72 AF and AM or the Al Bedoo Shrine Children's Hospitals.
