Gary Lee Jones was born May 10, 1943 in Fairbury, NE to Henry David and Evelyn Ruth Shoup Jones. He died June 2, 2010 at Bryan LGH East in Lincoln, NE at the age of 67 years and 23 days.
Gary attended Fairbury Public Schools until May 24, 1960, at which point he entered the United States Navy at San Diego, California. He was stationed on the USS Henry B. Wilson as a deck hand until he was honorably discharged on April 21, 1964. In Oct, 1962, Gary was onboard the USS Wilson in the Gulf of Mexico near Cuba when the Bay of Pigs/Cuban Missile Crisis occurred. Gary later received his GED on March 11, 1981 through Peru State College.
On June 7, 1963, he was united in marriage to (name removed for privacy) at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Glendale, California. To this union, one daughter was born. They divorced in 1994.
Gary began his career as a bricklayer by completing a 4-year apprenticeship with the Brown Construction Company of Fairbury in 1970. He began his business, Gary's Construction in 1978. During his 40 years in the construction business, Gary did brick and other construction work on numerous homes and businesses, not only within Fairbury and Jefferson County, but also in other portions of Nebraska and Kansas. He was one of the team of bricklayers that worked on the downtown street rebricking project on the downtown square in Fairbury. He did the same for the downtown area for the town of Red Cloud in the 1980's. He even bricked the building that his memorial service was held in.
He was a member of the Fairbury Elks Lodge.
He enjoyed gambling, playing cards, being with people and traveling.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
(Names removed for privacy) Survivors include his significant other, of Fairbury, one daughter of Hays, KS; One Sister and two brothers, all of Fairbury, Two Nieces, One Great-Niece, Three Great-Nephews, Two Aunts, one of Eugene, Ore. and the other of Los Angeles, CA; and numerous cousins and friends.
Services were June 7 at Gerdes-Meyer Funeral Home Chapel with Lay Pastor Lana Likens officiating. Cremation has taken place. Memorials to the family's choice.
