Army Specialist 4 David L Berry, 19, of Mesquite Street in Houston, Texas, was killed Thursday in South Vietnam when the armored personnel carrier he was riding in hit and exploded a mine. The Houston native was on his second tour of duty in Vietnam. He would have graduated with the January 20, 1966 Class of Sam Houston High School on Irvington in Houston, but left to enlist in the Army 17 July 1964 and was first assigned to Vietnam in June, 1965. Arriving in Vietnam 4 January 1966, David was assigned to the 2nd Platoon of B Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry, 25th Infantry Division, USARV, after service in Hawaii. Berry was a member of the Aldine Church of Christ.

A Note from The Virtual Wall

At 1600, 21 July 1966, the 2nd Platoon, B/1/5th Infantry, got into a firefight while conducting operations in the Filhol Rubber Plantation. During the fight, an armored personnel carrier maneuvered to attack the enemy's flank. The APC was totally destroyed when a command-detonated mine set off TNT and C-4 explosives carried within the APC. David, along with six other men died in the incident.
Survived by his parents, Dorothy Frances Harris of 1440 Mesquite, Houston and Cecil C Berry of 513 Mayford, Houston, Texas.
