Member of the Corps of Cadets at The Battle of New Market and a Mosby Ranger. Judge of the county courts of Mathews and Middlesex. Member of the Constitutional Convention of 1902. Judge of the Circuit Court of Virginia.
He was wounded and borne from the field by his comrades at New Market. He served as Commonwealth Attorney for Mathews County for sixteen years. At the same time, he served as Superintendent of Schools. He left those to accept a judgeship. In 1886 he was elected to the Virginia Legislature. When the county court system was abolished, he was elected to the Judgeship of the 13th Judicial Circuit. He and his wife Ellen Douglas Browne were married in 1871. They lived at Poplar Grove in Mathews County.
