Andrew Jackson Sowell (1815-1883) - Find a Grave Memorial

Alamo Defender Survivor. He moved with his family from Tennessee to Missouri and then settled in Gonzales Texas, in 1829. In 1833 as a farmer, he and his brothers became the first white men to raise corn in Guadalupe County. During the Texas Revolution he took part in the battles of Gonzales, Concepción and the Grass Fight. He served in the garrison of the Alamo, but shortly before the final battle he and others were ordered out to obtain supplies. They were delayed in Gonzales buying cattle and other supplies and did not return to the Alamo before its fall. After Texas gained its independence, he had a long career with the Texas Rangers. He took part in the Mexican War, served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War and was a noted scout and friend of Christopher (Kit) Carson. In 1957, the State of Texas erected historical markers in the San Geronimo Cemetery to pay tribute to he and his brother John N. Sowell Jr.
