He is listed in the first census of Madison County, AL, then Mississippi Territory. His name, Thomas NESMITH, appears on a monument in Huntsville, AL, erected by the DAR. In Scotland where they were originally from, it was spelled Naesmyth,
descendants of Robert the BRUCE. The name is said to have originated in this way: between 8 Sep 1249 , when Alexander III of Scotland was crowned King, and 16 Mar 1286 (when Alexander died). an aide-de-camp of the King, on the eve of a battle, was required to mend the King's armor. Though a man of powerful physique and a brave warrior he was unsuccessful as a mechanic. For his prowess, great daring and achievement, in battle he was knighted by the King with this laconic comment, "Although he is nae smyth, he is a brave gentleman." The armorial bearings of the family refer to this remark: a drawn sword between two war mantels broken, with the motto in old Scotch "Not by knoavery but by bravery." Thomas, whose father was probably a William because he named his oldest son William, was born in what is now York County, PA, 22 Nov 1741.
