Doris Ellen (Rice) Barb, 100 years old, of El Dorado, died Friday, Oct. 31, 2008 at Golden Living Center. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Carlson Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Sunset Lawns Cemetery.
She was born Sept. 29, 1908 at Climax, the daughter of Ervin Leslie and Frances Katherine (Nelson) Rice. Doris was a resident of El Dorado for 61 years and was an elementary educational teacher for 40 years. She graduated from Climax High School, Emporia State University, did some extension and correspondence classes, attended classes at Wichita State University, Friends University, and received her master's degree in 1968. Doris firmly believed that one must continue to learn.
On Oct. 9, 1945 she was married to Arlington (Arlie) Barb in Wilmington, Calif. He preceded her in death on April 1, 1962.
She was a member of First Baptist Church; American Association of University Women; Order of the Eastern Star; Business and Professional Women; women's circles of the Church; had served on the Educational Scholarship Committee; a former member of local state and national teaching association where she served on numerous committees and was a delegate for many years, especially for the Professional Negotiations Committee; and was the building representative for Skelly School, where she taught for many years. Doris was known in El Dorado as the "Cookie Lady," and entered her culinary accomplishments annually in the State Fair and all contests in El Dorado. Her hobbies also including gathering recipes and writing poetry, which were enjoyed by her family and friends. She was also a member of D.A.R.
Those leaves are: a son, Clell C. Barb and wife Edna of El Dorado; a daughter, Jean Hughes and husband Calvin of Olathe; granddaughter, Darla (Barb) Hanes and husband Wayne of El Dorado, who were her caregivers; seven other grandchildren and their spouses, Zinnia (Cox) Vandenburg and Daniel, Pat (Barb) Jamison and Richard, Steve Hughes and Sherry, Larry Hughes and Barbara, Jim Hughes and Margie, Mike Cox and Marie, and Robert Barb and Ginny; 16 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; a niece, Myrna Pinkstaff and husband Bob; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was also preceded in death by children, Floyd Barb and Alice (Cox) Irvin; one granddaughter; two sisters, Leafie L. McClayland and Josephine C. Smith; and a brother, Glen Rice.
