He served in Co B, 26th North Carolina Infantry Regiment in the War Between the States. He was wounded 3 X during his service. John Stewart McCain was captured at Petersburg and subsequently imprisoned at Pt. Lookout, Maryland. When he was released, he returned home to Union County and took up farming again. He married Emma Jane Elvira Steele and they raised a family of boys.
