Firefighter Barry DeLude a 20 year veteran with the Minneapolis Fire Department died from complications from the flu. He had been hospitalized for several days.
DeLude had not received a flu vaccination city officials said. It's unusual for a healthy adult to die of the flu, but not unheard of. They said health officials are investigating whether he had other health problems that may have contributed to his death. Minneapolis firefighters are encouraged but not required to get flu shots. Barry was well-liked by his colleagues.
Barry worked at Station No.17 and grew up in the south Minneapolis neighborhood where he had been stationed as a fire truck driver and pump operator (FMO.) Tom Thornberg, president of the Minneapolis firefighters union, said DeLude's colleagues were reeling.
"We're devastated," Thornberg said. "We're a very close group. We live together, and he's truly one of our brothers." The members of his crew have been given time off until the funeral. Barry is survived by his wife, Linda, two sons, Jacob and Mark, three brothers, two sisters, as well as his parents. What I remember best about Barry was his big smile. The Minneapolis Fire Department and the community lost a good friend.
When I am called to duty, God, whenever flames may rage;
Give me strength to save some life, whatever be its age.
Help me embrace a little child before it is too late
Or save an older person from the horror of that fate.
Enable me to be alert and hear the weakest shout,
And quickly and efficiently to put the fire out.
I want to fill my calling and to give the best in me,
To guard my every neighbor and protect his property.
And if, according to my fate, I am to lose my life;
Please bless with your protecting hand my children and my wife. Aman
