Mr. Howard Walter Haskell, 78, died Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002, at Charlotte Institute of Rehabilitation.
Born in Machias, Maine, Jan. 16, 1924, he was a son of the late Kennard G. and Florence Kilton Haskell. A graduate of Cherryfield Academy in Cherryfield, Maine, he served in the Army during World War II, taking part in the Normandy invasion, and was a commander in the Civil Air Patrol in the 1950s. He was an ordained minister who served Boiling Springs, Pine Grove, Martin Street and St. Paul United Methodist churches. He also worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a postmaster, serving Ahoskie and Williamston. In Williamston, he helped reorganize Holly Springs Methodist Church and furnish its parsonage. He belonged to Aldersgate United Methodist Church and the Methodist Men there, Masonic Lodge No. 202, the Shrine, Scottish Rite and Sudan Temple, American Legion Post 82, National Association of Retired Federal Employees and Habitat for Humanity. He studied at NYA Radio School in Maine and Mass Radio School and was a member of Shelby Amateur Radio Club.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law, Evelyn and Bud Farnsworth.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Wilda Ray Dorsey Haskell; two sons and daughters-in-law, John K. and Susan Haskell of Shelby and Forrest W. and Anne Haskell of San Marcos, Texas; a granddaughter, Robin Haskell of Charlotte; a brother and sister-in-law, Dr. A.R. and Barbara Haskell of Cape Coral, Fla.; and a sister and brother-in-law, Jean and Bob Sigler of Brewer, Maine.
A private burial for the family will be held at Cleveland Memorial Park.
