Mabel was the 3rd wife of my grandfather Willie Glines. My grandmother was before her and had died a few years before I was born. Mabel was the only grandmother on that side that I knew and I always thought she was the sweetest woman and thought of her as a real grandmother. She always tried to please everyone. She had been married before my grandfather to a man for about 5 years, Joseph Rowley, but he died of cancer even before my real grandmother had died from her bad heart. Mabel never had any children of her own which is sad because I know she would have made a really good mother. She loved children.
She worked most of her life, and at one time worked as a bookkeeper at Parkers in Davenport Iowa. She was full blooded German, even though her parents and grandparents were born here. She grew up in a basically German town area.
She was born in Gilberts Town, which is now called Bettendorf Iowa to Frank Fredrick and Annie Dora Kiem Hartung.
Mabel taught sewing, which included tatting, crocheting, knitting, as well as hand sewing and by machine. She crocheted, sewed, and knitted many many things in her life. I have a few.
Mabel will be truely missed by my sons and I. We visited her as often as we could in the nursing home. My sons adored her.
