Charles Leland Lockard, 82, died at 10:25 a.m., Tuesday, June 24, 2003, at home.

He was born on Monday, Dec 27, 1920, in Cobden IL. to Herbert Lee Lockard and Lettia May (Gunn) Lockard.

He served in the U.S. Navy during WW II. We was a member of the First Baptist Church, where he served over the years as church moderator, deacon, board of trustees and finance board. He also served as superintendent of the Junion High Department. He received his masters in education at SIU Carbondale. He retired from Murphysboro School District 186 after 36 years as a teacher and principal, spending most of his years as a principal at Logan elementary school, touching many lives. He also was principal and taught at Carruthers middle school. He was a life member of Elementary School Principal Association, Illinois Education Association and the Jackson County Retired Teachers Association. He also was a member of the Carpenters Union. For many years he worked during the summer months assisting in his father's business, H.L.Lockard Construction.

He married Chresta A. Ward in Murphysboro on March 26, 1944.

He leaves behind 3 daughters and their spouses, Lea Ann and Bruce Fager, Sue Lynn and Murl Johnson and Janet and Bryce Cramer, all of Murphysboro, IL.; one sister, Louise Rahming of Murphysboro; grandchildren, Byram, Brad, Darin and wife Nicki Fager, Stephanie and Andrea Johnson, Kim and husband Kent James, and Shaun Cramer; great grandchildren, Robert Fager, Garrett and Zach James; many nieces, nephews, cousins and many wonderful friends.

Leland loved sharing stories and seeing his former students.
