Daniel Lee Stidham was the son of Jeremiah Stidham and Virginia Jane Osborn. He was married to first to Drucilla Sturgill (daughter of Andrew Sturgill and Nancy Booth)and then married to Cynthia Beverly. Drucilla and Daniel were the parents of: William, Joel, Ardelia, Franklin, Stewart, Hezekiah, Elizabeth and Rosa. Cynthia and Daniel were the parents of O. Venezuela, Johnnie Daniel Lee, and Elbert Elsworth. He fought in the Civil War: Co. 1 51 Virginia Infantry (Confederate)and served under John Wolf.Daniel enlisted as a private with Co. A of the 51st VA Infantry of the Confederate States of America in Abingdon, VA on 16 July 1861. The 51st was organized in Wytheville with men from Amherst, Bland, Grayson, Nelson, Patrick, Tazwell, Wise and Wythe Counties and was under the command of Brigadier General Gabriel C. Wharton. Daniel saw action in several skirmishes including the Battle of New Market, VA., where, on 15 May 1864, the 51st VA Infantry lead the charge. Daniel was captured and taken as a prisoner of war on 19 Sept. 1864 in Winchester, VA. He was transferred from Harper's Ferry to Pt. Lookout, MD on 26 Sept 1864. Paroled from Pt. Lookout, he was sent to Aiken's Landing where he became part of a prisoner exchange on 15 Mar 1865.
