Robert M. Crandall was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant at Amador County, California, August 16, 1861, and mustered into Company C, 1st California Infantry. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant February 26, 1862, and transferred to Company G. 1st Lieutenant Crandall marched with the California Column to New Mexico Territory where he was promoted to Captain February 7, 1863, and transferred to Company A. Captain Crandall was mustered out at Fort Union, New Mexico Territory, August 31, 1864. After the war he settled in Tucson, Arizona Territory, where he became a member of Negley Post, No. 1, Grand Army of the Republic. At the time of his death he was survived by one son and one daughter. Robert Crandall was buried in the Grand Army plot of the Court Street Cemetery. When that cemetery was condemned his remains were transferred to Evergreen Memorial Park.
