Albert Howard was a '49er, having driven an ox team from Wisconsin to California during the gold rush. Later he used his ox team to carry freight around Deadwood, South Dakota Territory. He was the son of Theodore B. Howard.

Albert married Mary Jane Tillotson December 1, 1864. Between them, thay had 7 children; Charles Albert, Rupert Lee, Rosamond Mary, Ina May, Burten Franklin, Frederick Theodore, and Josephine June.
