Anthony Austin, aged 70 years, died yesterday morning at his home on Engrem avenue after a short illness with a complication of diseases.
He was born in Swanton, but had lived in this city for the last 65 years. When Rutland was a village he served as a policeman for 10 years and was also a foreman of the old Nickwackett Hose company. At the time of his death he was a shoemaker on Center street.
Mr. Austin was a civil war veteran, having been a member of company H, 14th regiment Vermont volunteers, serving under the late Capt. W.C. Dunton and taking part in the battle of Gettysburg. He was a charter member of Roberts post, No. 14, Grand Army of the Republic of this city, and was one of the most faithful members of this organization.
He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Julia Carbo of Lion Mountain, N.Y., and two brothers, Henry of this city and Joseph of Glens Falls, N.Y.
