Pvt Alexes H Bortman
Birth: Jul. 17, 1841
Death: Oct. 13, 1862
Harrisburg
Dauphin County
Pennsylvania, USA

A.H. "Boartman," Pvt Co K 125th PA, is included in Section Z, Civil War Veterans who expired at Camp Curtin. Although there is a spelling discrepancy with the surname, the place-of- and date-of-death coincide with Regimental records.

Regimental Records of 125th Pennsylvania Infantry includes the muster roll (p. 323):

Company 'K': Boartman, Pvt. A.H.
Mustered into Service: August 16, 1862
Remarks: Wounded at [the Battle of] Antietam Sept. 17, 1862-died of his wounds at Harrisburg Oct 13, 1862. bur. in Mount Kalmia Cemetery. [Note: In 2011, Mount Kalmia is known as Harrisburg Cemetery]

AND (pp. 85-86):

Pvt A. H. Boartman is listed among those considered 'mortally wounded' at the Battle of Antietam.

Ebensburg (Cambria County PA) War Memorial Spelling:

Boartman, Pvt. Alexes H.

coincides with spelling from Regimental muster rolls, and this consistency is the basis for the spelling of this memorial record.

Clerically-kept records at St Michaels in Loretto, Cambria County PA, (see Index of Burials at St Michaels in Loretto PA by Lisa Baker at: http://www.camgenpa.com/db/cemetery/cemList.php?cem=165) lists:

BORTMAN, Alexius
Born: 17 Jul 1841
Died: Sept 1862

but does not identify his location as within the 'main section.' Author Lisa Baker notes that she did not confirm headstone info outside of the 'main section.' Speculation as a basis for this record includes:
1. Combination of surname and given name are too unusual for these various records to account for more than one individual.
2. Many Cambria Countians were enlisted in Company K of the 125th and probably include this Private.
3. Clerical records may indicate a memorial service but not a Hbg disinterment with re-interment in Loretto, PA.
4. Church precision for date-of-birth is accepted, and Regimental precision for date-of-death is accepted. Regiment's date-of-death is consistent with Camp Curtin (Hbg) and Cemetery records.
