Awarded for actions during the World War II

The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Captain William C. Evers (MCSN: 0-9568), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Commanding Officer of Company I, Third Battalion, Ninth Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, on 25 February 1945.

When intense enemy automatic and mortar fire suddenly swept his company in an attack from the north edge of Motoyama Airfield Number Two, pinned down his left platoon and caused many casualties among vital personnel, Captain Evers personally advanced along his assault line from one unit to another, rallying his men as he directed their fire and movement. Inspiring his company to advance against tremendous opposition, he continued to risk his life under hostile fire until, while reconnoitering on the left, he was struck by enemy small-arms fire and killed instantly. A courageous leader, Captain Evers by his heroic example and skillful direction of his company's fierce onslaught had succeeded in inflicting severe casualties upon the enemy and in weakening the main line of Japanese resistance on Iwo Jima so the friendly troops subsequently took the vital ground with comparative ease. He gallantly gave his life in the service of his country.
