Mack R. Powell, age 74, of Ashland, passed away Wednesday, September 4, 2013 at Boone Hospital in Columbia, Missouri. He was born on March 3, 1939 on the family farm in Benton County, Missouri, the son of Clarence and Nina Powell. Later came Mack's siblings: Jack, Joe, Ralph, and Jane.
Mack began his formal education at National School, walking 1 1/2 miles to the one room schoolhouse. Before he graduated from Warsaw High School in 1957, he was recruited by the MODOT Construction Division. Upon graduation, MODOT sent him to the University of Missouri at Rolla to be trained as a surveyor. Mack worked for MODOT for two years before he was drafted into the U S Army.
Mack had two children, Todd Randall and Alisa Janell. For the many years that Mack worked in Kansas City, the family made their home in Grandview, MO. Mack coached baseball, was an Indian Guides leader, and participated in many of his children's other activities. In 1988, Mack married Viola Hardison. With that marriage, he inherited an extended step family which included 5 grown children; Malissa, Diane, Cyndi, Patty, and Mike. Mack had a nickname for all of them and entertained the whole family with his insightful and humorous observations of their activities and remarks.

He has served on the Board of the National Cemetery for the past 15 or more years, working with others to make many important and lasting improvements.
