My Mother died in 2001, Mom had 8 children, one died in infancy. My Mother while quite a beauty in her life, died poorer than poor.
My daughter paid for all the expenses in the funeral, cremation, even flew one of my sisters, and my Brother and nephew in for the funeral (and paid hotel and food as well for everyone)
My daughter purchased 7 miniature urns, one for each child filled with a bit of Mom's ashes. We had the urns placed at the pulpit on a beautiful plate surrounded by little brass candle holders with stars cut out of them. above the candles was a giant picture of Mom, my daughter had printed up It was so lovely!
A week after Mom's funeral, the home called me and asked me when I was going to pick up mom's remaining ashes. I said I had already got her ashes. They said no, you only got a tiny portion of her ashes. I went over there and picked up my Mom's ashes, shocked to find they had put them in a box :( My Mom in a box. They put her in a shopping bag thingy and I cried all the way home.
That night all I could do was cry and stare at the box. By one in the morning I called my neighbor and friend up and asked how she would feel about having someone spend the night. She said no problem, she would make up the couch. I told her it wasn't me, it was my Mom. Carol started laughing at me and told me she would meet me hallways. We met in our robes and I handed Mom off to Carol.
I still didn't rest that night so well. The next morning I asked her if Mom could stay a while, so I could figure out what to do.
Mom stayed at Carols for 3 months. Early on her husband had nearly opened the box thinking it was an ebay gift for him. Another neighbor asked Carol if she could open the box to see what cremated remains looked like. Carol and I would Joke about her "visitor" I would ask if her "visitor" was giving her any problems. I called all of my siblings to see if they would take Mom. No one wanted the box though.
I do not know why or how but about 3 months after that first night, I came to a decision of what to do with Mom. I took it back to the place I got it from and paid them to open the box and fill little plastic bags and 2 sterling silver purses with Mom's remains. They did it and resealed the box. They told me to take the purses to a jeweler to have them sealed. My daughter was delighted when I gave her one of the purses. I gave my daughter a bag to sprinkle somewhere in New York as she was going there for vacation. My daughter went on a cruise and asked for more bags to sprinkle on all the ports. On this cruise something weird happened. Her husband and her were on deck enjoying a cocktail and the little silver purse (on a long chain) fell into my daughters drink.
In the next few years, I went to half moon bay where Mom was born and sprinkled bags in the flower fields where she had once roamed as a child with her 2 sisters. I went to ever house we had lived and sprinkled a bag of her ashes. For my birthday in 2004 my daughter and son in law took me on a cruise. I sprinkled ashes at a beautiful spot in every port. On this cruise I took a bag and sprinkled them to the wind over the ocean. It was so beautiful the way the wind picked up her ashes throwing them this way and that, and the sun sorta reflecting them. That was amazing.
In 2004 we moved from California to Branson Missouri. On my way here I stopped off in Lodi to put ashes on her maternal great grandparents graves, I stopped in Madera at her fathers graveside to sprinkle a bag, her fathers mother and grandmother are also buried there. I stopped in French camp and sprinkled ashes on her Mothers Grave. I stopped in Wichita, KS and sprinkled ashes on her GG Grandfathers grave. I planted ashes under a tree in front of my daughters new house. The box containing her remaining ashes will be buried with me when I die.
I know my Mother would have approved of what I have done. Some of it is pretty humorous, and Mom had a great sense of humor. additional added 3 3 2011 Made a youtube of mom http://www.youtube.com/user/TaneyCoChCrested?feature=mhum#p/a/u/0/Fvmkgno1lDM and also let it be known that in my grief i messed up on my own Mothers death cert. I listed her moms maiden name a dabadie and it should have been Coffey
