Journalist. He edited for the Atlanta "Constitution" from 1879 until his death. He gained fame through editorials and speeches, which attempted to reconcile the North and South following the Civil War. He delivered one of his most famous speaches, "The New South," in New York City in 1886. Grady died in Atlanta in 1889. A hospital and high school were later named in honor of him in Atlanta.
