Henry Harrison Ashton, known as Harry Ashton, was born in Dumfriesshire, Scotland. He later moved to England were he learned the trade of Stone Mason. In 1849 he moved to the United States. In 1853 he returned to England and enlisted in the Sixth Light Dragoons, or cavalry, for service in the Russo-Turkish war. Ashton was among 100 selected to join the Eighth Light Dragoons and soon landed on the Crimean peninsula and participated in the battle made famous by Alfred Lord Tennyson's poem, "Charge of the Light Brigade." There he was wounded and nursed back to health by Florence Nightingale and while in the hospital was visited by Queen Alexandra. In 1859 he returned to the United States and briefly served as a Sergeant in the Civil War with the First Pennsylvania Cavalry. He later moved to Centerville, Iowa where he died.
