Herman C. Athey (Cumberland)

CUMBERLAND — Herman Charles Athey, 85, of Cumberland, died Friday, July 7, 2006, at Memorial Hospital.

Born Dec. 28, 1920, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Edward C. and Mary J. (Willard) Athey. He was also preceded in death by five brothers, Edgar, Garland, Willard, Raymond and Clyde Athey; and three sisters, Irene Mangus, Evelyn Richards, and Clara Cunningham.

Mr. Athey was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, worked for the B & O Railroad, and was Methodist by faith. Herman played country and blue grass music. He entertained on the Western Maryland Railroad between Cumberland and Frostburg. He and his wife Betty organized several blue grass festivals in Flintstone. In his 20's and 30's he played softball for Lacy's Grocery and he enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Surviving are his wife, Betty Louella (Miller) Athey; two sons, Ronald H. Athey and wife Jane, Towson and Thomas R. Athey and wife Linda, Glen Burnie; four stepchildren, Doris Hilton and husband Bob, Glen Burnie, David Miller and wife Melinda, Cumberland, Robert Miller, Glen Burnie, William Miller and wife Donna, Cumberland; six grandchildren, Crystal Legaluppi and husband Marco, Glen Arm, Laura Bupp and husband Robert, Churchville, Jeanne Mosmiller and husband Joseph, Severn, Thomas Athey Jr. and wife Latasha, Glen Burnie, Clinton Athey, Atlanta, Ga., and Marisa Wright and husband Mike, Cresaptown; two step-grandchildren, Sean Miller, Cumberland and Betty Miller, Cumberland; numerous great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, (scarpellifh.com), on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Monday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Fred Iser officiating.

Interment will be in the Maryland State Veterans Cemetery at Rocky Gap, Flintstone.

Military Honors will be accorded by the Combined Veterans Honor Guard.

CUMBERLAND — Herman Charles Athey, 85, of Cumberland, died Friday, July 7, 2006, at Memorial Hospital.
