Joe "Mother Nature", a resident of Chimayó, was predeceased by his paternal grandparents Demetrio and Eufracia Martinez; and maternal grandmother Senaida Trujillo.

Joe was survived by his parents Joe S. Martinez Sr. and Angie T. Martinez of Chimayó; daughter Andrea Martinez of Alcalde; grandsons: Deon Garduño of Alcalde, Deshaun Garduño of Alcalde; granddaughter Aubrianna Garduño of Alcalde; sisters: Darla Vigil (husband Kevin) of Cundiyó, Sandra Valdez (companion David Gomez) of Chimayó; brother Nel Martinez of Santa Fe; sister Sadie Chavez of Española; niece Candyce Valencia of Rio Chama; nephew Josh Vigil of Denver, Colorado; nephew Nicholas Martinez of Scottsdale, Arizona; niece Shayna Padilla of Colorado Springs, Colorado; niece Desiree Vigil of Dallas, Texas; nephew Timmy Vigil of Cundiyó; special nephew Lucas Gomez of Chimayó; niece Maryssa Chavez of Española; nephew Isaiah Chavez of Española; great-nieces: Ceryne and Nyree; great-nephew Cedryc; and many other relatives and friends.

Joe Jr. was once employed at Los Alamos National Lab and Española Public Schools, thereafter. He also spent many years employed by his father, Joe Sr. as a stone mason. Joe had many friends and he was loved by everyone. He had a big heart and was always willing to help anyone. Joe also had a passion for basketball in his high school years. He was an all-star basketball player and played basketball in his Dad's team for many years. Joe enjoyed watching wrestling and spending time with family. He enjoyed the outdoors and listening to Rancheras. He will be missed very dearly.

A Public visitation and Rosary were on 5 Oct 2010 in the Chapel of Peace of the DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory. Mass of Christian Burial was on 6 Oct 2010 at Holy Family Church in Chimayó. Burial followed at El Potrero Cemetery in Chimayó. Pallbearers: Best-friend Ernest Sandoval, Brother-in-law David Gomez, Brother-in-law Kevin Vigil, nephew Timmy Vigil, nephew Lucas Gomez, and nephew Isaiah Chavez. Honorary pallbearers: all his nephews and nieces.
