Murder at a Card Table – A Gambler Shot by a Stranger – No Apparent Cause for the Deed
Robert S. Alderson, a "sporting" man, was shot and almost instantly killed in this town last Saturday evening. He had been playing seven-up in Anton Schmidt's (late Burns') saloon, corner of Main and Commercial streets, but what led to the tragedy no one seems to know precisely for there were few persons in the saloon at the time—between seven and eight o'clock. Deceased was buried in the Odd Fellows Cemetery on Monday afternoon, a collection having been taken up around town by Charley Harlow for that purpose. This amounted to $139.25, of which sum $82 was handed over to Mrs. Alderson, who with her two small children, were otherwise left utterly without means. [Placer Argus, Auburn, Saturday, 1-14-1882.
