AMOS KAUFFMAN DIES,
FOUNDED FRUIT FARM

Amos L. Kauffman, 89, of Bird-in-Hand R1, founder of the A.L. Kauffman and Sons fruit farms, died Wednesday, 3:15 p.m.

Death occured unexpectedly at the Fairmount Rest Home, Ephrata RD, where he had resided since 1968. He had been under the care of a physician.

Born in Leacock Township, he was the son of the late Eli and Mary Smoker Kauffman, and husband of the late Susan F. Lapp Kauffman, who died in June, 1959.

Kauffman a self-employed fruit grower and farmer, planted his first orchard in 1911, the year he founded A.L.Kauffman and Sons. He planted his next orchard in 1916, built a packing house in 1937, added a frozen food locker plant in 1944, and opened a general grocery store in 1957. Today, the fourth generation of Kauffman's are involved in the business.

Survivers include five children, Sadie, wife of Christian B. Beiler; Elam L. Kauffman; Mary L., wife of Aaron King, all of Ronks R1; and Melvin L. Kauffman, Roaring Branch; 31 grandchildren and 47 great-grandchildren.
