Born on family farm "Tower Hill" near Lewes,Delaware which his 5th great grandfather purchased 228 years before.

Graduated in 1850 from: Psychopatic Medical College, Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1855 from American Medical College, and NY Electric Medical College, NY City NY.

Established Middle States Medical Reform Magazine which denounced existing methods of treatment, specifically "bloodletting."

1857 Purchased Penisula News and Advisor, local paper at that time which had been "pro-slavery" and under his ownership became "anti-slavery". Circulation extended to all states, and one of the contributors to his paper was Horace Greeley.
It was the only Republican Newspaper in Delaware and only anti-slavery paper south of the Mason Dixon line.
Also was FIRST paper to advocate Abraham Lincoln for president.

PRESIDENTIAL APPOINTMENTS: Appointed by President Abraham Lincoln to Consul to Glascow, Scotland.
Appointed by President Grant to Collector of Internal Revenue.

Married Ann Ellen Hudson on November 23, 1867. She was the daughter of Henry Hudson of Milford, De.
Laid out town of Ellendale, Delaware for William S. McCauley but named the town after his wife. Also named the main street in Ellendale "Prettyman Street".

Children: Charles Gibbons Prettyman, Clinton Albert Prettyman, Ella Prettyman, William McCauley Prettyman,(born 4/24/1862 d 6/14/1863), Elizabeth Mathison Prettyman, Sallie Parker Prettyman, Marshall Hall Prettyman(b 11/29/1857), Henry Hudson Prettyman (b9/22/1854/) James Edward Prettyman (b.10/28/1865)John Shepard Prettyman Jr. And another William born 12/26/1877, first William died as an infant.

Son of Joel Prettyman and Sarah Repell Parker Prettyman, who was the granddaughter of Anderson and Sarah Burton Prettyman Parker.

Grandson of Shepard and Sallie Hazzard King Prettyman.

Great Grandson of William and Comfort Kollock Prettyman who was the daughter of Shepard and Comfort Kollock and granddaughter of Simon and Comfort Shepard Prettyman Kollock.

He died of endocarditis.
