Mrs. Betty Geraldine "Gerry" Pulliam, age 74, of 116 Morgan Drive, Rome, the Garden Lakes community, died Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2002, following a lengthy illness.
A native of Titusville, Fla., Mrs. Pulliam was born in Oct. 10, 1928, the daughter of Mattie Lou Carter Carlile and the late David Nathaniel Carlile.
She had moved to Rome and Floyd County in 1977 from Milledgeville. Mrs. Pulliam was a member of the Garden Lakes Baptist Church where she sang in the choir and worked with the children's choir. She attended Stetson University, where she met her husband, Chaplain Thomas H. Pulliam. She had also received training as a practical nurse. For a period of time, Mrs. Pulliam had taught general education in Virginia to homebound students.
She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother with a great sense of humor who loved to travel, read and enjoyed bird watching. Mrs. Pulliam accompanied her husband to several churches across the country and was the pianist at the churches where he pastored, including Indian River City, Fla. Baptist Church; Orsino Baptist Church; Bethel Baptist Church in the Wake Forest, N.C. area; Calvary Baptist Church of Ashburn, Va; Ft. Campbell, Ky., served for three years with her husband in Germany; Stewartstown, Pa.; Fort Gordon and Dublin.
She was a former Den Mother with the Cub Scouts and a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Florida.
Mrs. Pulliam is survived by her husband, Thomas Harold Pulliam, Sr., to whom she was married on June 3, 1951; one daughter, Grace Elizabeth Pulliam Craddock and her husband, Commander Chaplain Ronald Dean Craddock, USN, of Virginia Beach, Va; two sons, Thomas H. Pulliam Jr and his wife, Melanie, of Rome and Glenn Daniel Pulliam; five grandchildren, Thomas Michael Pulliam, David Harold Pulliam, Faith Danielle Bello, Ronald Dean Craddock II and Thomas Eric Craddock; two great-grandchildren, Serena Grace Bello and Lucas Eric Bello; mother, Mattie Lou Carlile of Rome; one sister, Minnie Mae Stauffer of Titusville, Fla.; two brothers, David Nathaniel Carlile or Mims, Fla. and James Thaddeus Carlile of Apopka, Fla; an aunt, Hollie Grace Currin of Arlington Heights, IL.; along with a host of nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services for Mrs. Pulliam will be held on Saturday morning, Nov. 2, 2002, at 11 a.m. in the sanctuary of the Garden Lakes Baptist Church with Dr. Floyd Roebuck and the Rev. Wayne Hopper officiating. Interment will follow in the Oaknoll Memorial Gardens. On Saturday, Mrs. Pulliam will be carried to the church to lie in state from 10 a.m. until the service hour.
Mrs. Pulliam will lie in state at the Heritage Chapel of the Jennings Funeral Home where the family will receive friends Friday evening from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. At other hours they may be contacted at the residence.
Pallbearers are asked to meet at the church by 10:30 a.m. on Saturday and include Thomas H. Pulliam Jr., Ronald D. Craddock, Glenn D. Pulliam, Ronald D. Craddock II, Thomas Michael Pulliam, David H. Pulliam, Pat Coffey and Herschel Bailey.
