My dad was born on October 1, 1917 at his parents' home on E. West St., just east of S. Market St. in Troy, Ohio. He was the sixth of nine children and the first boy born into the family. His oldest sister died as a toddler but six girls and two boys lived to adulthood. My dad graduated from Troy High School in 1935 and originally wanted to work for the railroad as his father had done. But his dad discouraged him from that path and he began working for the post office in Troy as a letter carrier until he was drafted into the Army. He ended up spending time both in Europe and the South Pacific. Before he left, he and my mom were married on June 26, 1941 in Petersburg, Virginia.
After his Army time was up, he returned to Ohio and his postal job. He and my mom had four daughters, then I showed up and I guess they decided that was enough.
My dad eventually worked 'on the window' at the Troy post office-I remember he used to go in to work at 4:30am each day. Then for the last seven years of his career, he worked as a rural route carrier which he really enjoyed. His final day of work was the last day of 1977, less than a month before the unforgettable blizzard of 1978 which paralyzed the area. During his retirement, he enjoyed time spent with his grandchildren and he and my mom were able to go places and see people as much as possible.
Happily, he had a number of years of good health while retired but in 1992 he suffered a debilitating stroke from which he never fully recovered.
Needless to say, I really miss my dad.
