Son of Friedrick & Greisel Settele he was born in Mauerstetten, Ostallgäu, Bavaria, Germany. Father of Fritz Settele, with his first wife, Ann (surname unknown). They were divorced while he was still living in Germany.
He was married for the second time to Bertha Baumeister on June 4, 1904. After several miscarriages they had a son, Alfred "Freddy", (b.1906, d. 1993, m. Leocardia "Dot" Sutkiewicz) and a daughter, Bertha, nicknamed Mitzi, (b. 1907, d. 1986, m. Arthur Belanger) before immigrating to the United States.
He came to the States alone, arriving on November 2, 1907, and his wife and two children arrived the following year on May 2, 1908.
They settled in New Bedford, where he found work in the cotton mills.
They had six more living children and one stillborn daughter:
Ellen, b. 1909, d. 1988, m. Maurille Gervais
Clara, b. 1910, d. 2005, m. Peter Joseph Eckert
Harry, Jr., b. 1912, d. 2003, m. Mary Anna Josefek
Otto Paul, b. 1913, d. 1997, m. Sophie Julia Kusniesz
Stillborn daughter, 1914
Louis Harry, b. 1915, d. 2001, m. Kathleen Mary "Kay" Higham
Norma, b. 1922, d. 2010. m. David Pimental.
The 'baby' of the family was my mother, Norma, who was born in the house her father built at 452 Hawes St. in the north end of New Bedford, Massachusetts.
Harry was grandfather to 23 grandchildren from the eight children who grew up in New Bedford.
Alfred's children: Bertha (Settele) Thall; Ronald Settele; Pauline (Settele) Heyder; Alfred Settele Jr.
Bertha's children: Arthur 'Sonny' Belanger; Estelle (Belanger) Steffens; Eleanor (Belanger) Zbranek; Raymond Belanger.
Ellen's children: Maurice Gervais; Louis Gervais.
Clara's children: Allan Paul Eckert; Stephen Eckert; David Eckert.
Harry, Jr's children: Maryann (Settele) McCann; Dorothy Ellen (Settele) Bednar; Carol (Settele) Forte; Harry Settele III; Bertha (Settele) Jacob.
Louis' children: Karen E. (Settele) Martin; Lois (Settele) Oullette; Richard H. Settele.
Norma's children: Bertha Settele 'Sara' (Pimentel) Andrews; Donna J. Pimentel.
Otto had no children and it isn't known if his son from his first marriage had any.
Widowed in 1949, he sold the house on Hawes St and lived with my parents for a short time. He married for a third time, while traveling in Ohio to visit a stamp collecting show. The marriage appears to have taken place in Ohio in late 1950 or early in 1951.
When I was growing up, whenever they talked about her at family gatherings, no one ever used her name. It seems that Harry didn't have a will so she got "everything" which included a fairly large, well kept stamp collection
