Bavaria (Bayern), Germany
|Death: ||Apr. 9, 1865|
This decrepit tomb is the final home of Frederick Bottler, pioneer brewer.
George Friedrich Bottler was interred here after his death from consumption April 9, 1865, in The Dalles. He was a young man, Born August 14, 1834 in Ansbach, Bavaria. He was one of the first brewers at the Dalles and brother to George Michael Bottler, one of Portland's first brewers.
George Michael Bottler built the tomb and memorialized his brother with a six-foot pink marble slab with the inscription: "Gently his ashes shall rest." He purchased an adjoining grave so that he might one day rest next to his brother, but died of lung inflammation on March 23, 1868, while on a trip to Germany, and was buried there.
Henry Saxer founded the first brewery in Portland, The Liberty Brewing Company, in 1852. George Michael Bottler established the next, City Brewery, in 1856. After his death, George's good friend, Henry Weinhardt, took over Bottler's interest in the business. Weinhardt renamed the brewery and continued to expand business until it was the largest in the Pacific Northwest.
George and Fred's cousin, Michael Bottler, was a cooper, making barrels for the industry, and his descendants in Portland are assisting in the restoration.
The 1860 census for Dalles City shows a Frederick Bottler age 27. Also in the history of Wasco county for the year 1860 (page12) Fred Bottler is listed as a brewer.
November 1862 Fred Bottler of Dalles City applied and received a passport so that he could travel to Germany. (US Passport applications 1861-1867, Roll 112 - 16 Oct 1862-04 Dec 1862)

Funeral of Mr. Bottler -- Our German citizens, friends of Mr. Bottler, turned out in large numbers yesterday to pay their last respects to the deceased. The procession from his residence to the cemetery was provided by the German Band, playing the funeral dirge. Mr. B was an old resident of Portland and the number in attendance at the exercises of yesterday showed that he was greatly respected in life.
