Aztec Independent Review, Aug 1950--Grandma Maddox Laid to Rest--Mrs. Amanda Maddox, affectionately known to her many friends as Grandma Maddox, passed away Sunday, August 13 in Durango at age 87 years, 7 months and 5 days. Amanda Ellor Black was born January 8, 1863 at Clinton, Missouri. On June 27, 1880 she married Thomas P. Maddox in Madison County, Missouri and to them were born ten children, three of whom and her husband preceded her in death. In 1890 the family came west to Colorado and in 1904 they moved to Aztec, New Mexico. Surviving Mrs. Maddox are four sons, Charles and Robert Maddox of Aztec, Mark Maddox of Ruidoso, New Mexico, and Frank Maddox of El Cajon, Calif.; 16 grandchildren and 32 great grandchildren, and a host of friends. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Presbyterian Church in Aztec with Rev. Floyd Painton in charge. Burial was in Aztec Cemetery.-------------
The Durango Herald Democrat, Monday, August 14, 1950, p6--Mr. T. P. Maddox, formerly of Aztec, Dies Here at 85--Mrs. Amanda Ellor Maddox, 85, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Edith Bell of 2901 Main Avenue, Sunday afternoon. Mrs. Maddox was born January 8, 1865 at Clinton, Missouri. She married Thomas P. Maddox in 1882 {sic 1880}. The family moved to Denver in 1902. The following year they moved to Aztec, N.M. Maddox died in 1948 {sic 1942} an is widow moved to California where she lived before returning here some months ago. Mrs. Maddox was a member of the Presbyterian church in Aztec and was active in the work of the church. Survivors are her daughters, Mrs. Emma Hughes and Mrs. Edith Bell of Durango, and Mrs. Virginia Duhrkoop of Burbank, California; sons Charles W. and Robert W. {sic L.} Maddox of Aztec, Mark W. Maddox of Ruidoso, N.M., and Frank Maddox of El Cahone {sic El Cajon}, Calif. She was preceded in death by her husband and three children. Memorial services in Aztec are pending.
