Stanley Ross Steiner, 62, of Ashland, died Tuesday morning, Jan. 20, 2009, at his residence following a 20-year battle with Parkinson's Disease. He was born in Ashland on March 22, 1946, and was the son of Ross O. and Lillian Miller Steiner.

He has been a resident of Ashland County all of his life. He was a 1964 graduate of Mapleton High School and was a graduate of the Ohio State Highway Patrol Academy's 85th Class.

He was a trooper with the Ohio State Highway Patrol for 24 years and was named Trooper of the Year in the state of Ohio in 1980. Following his retirement from the highway patrol, he worked for the Ashland City Law Director's office as an investigator.

He was a veteran of the United States Army serving in Japan from 1966 to 1969 during the Vietnam War.

He was a member of Nankin Federated Church, where he sang in the church choir, served as chairman of the church administrative council, was a member of the pastor parish committee, the finance committee and also served as a lay speaker for the church. He was a member of the former Nankin Lions Club and had served as a zone chairman.

He was a Little League baseball coach with the Ashland Youth League and also coached girls softball in the Ashland Parks and Recreation League.

He was a member of the Ashland Umpires Association and umpired high school boys baseball, girls softball and men's fast pitch softball games. He also went to Houston, Texas, in 1986 where he umpired at the Olympic Festival for men's fast pitch softball when they were trying to introduce the sport into the Olympic Games.

He was a member of the Ashland County Sports Hall of Fame committee and was in charge of organizing the Hall of Fame parades. He was honored by the Ashland County Sports Hall of Fame committee with the Trustee Achievement Award.

On Jan. 24, 1970, he was married to Diane S. Lacy, who survives him. He is also survived by one daughter, Gretchen K. Lively of Columbus; two sons, Michael R. (Heidi) Steiner of Savannah and Benjamin A. Steiner of Ashland; four grandchildren, Andrew Lively, Beth Lively, Clayton Steiner and Mary Steiner; his mother, Lillian (Jim) Steiner Metzger of Ashland; one sister, Tabitha (Daniel) Conwell of Wooster; three brothers, Alan (Janet) Steiner of Ashland, Timothy (Cindy) Steiner of Kentucky and Larry (Dee) Steiner of Ashland; and his father-in-law, Michael Lacy of Nova.

He was preceded in death by his father, Ross O. Steiner on Oct. 26, 1993, and one grandson, Dylan Michael Steiner on Nov. 17, 1996.
