Benjamin was born in New York. He married Sarah Lavantia CARD in Park, St. Joseph, Michigan on 24 May 1851. He enlisted as a volunteer with the Michigan Cavalry, Company B on 14 Aug 1862 and served for three years.

The family migrated to Logan, Utah in the 1880s, then they settled in Preston, Idaho. Some of the family eventually moved to Big Timber, Sweet Grass, Montana and varioius locations in California. Today descendants are scattered throughout the United States.
