Cleve grew up near Whitewater,Kansas. He and his older brother Earl got married within two days of each other in 1911. He had known his wife Pearl from school as she was at Whitewater High School in the same class as his older sister Ethel.
By 1917 he was working in Whitewater as a furniture store clerk. 1926 found him, along with Pearl and their one child, as the manager of the Modoc Hotel in Satanta, Kansas. In 1930 he worked at the Wichita railway station. After the war, he and Pearl followed their child to California. Mechanically minded, he found employment in a Long Beach tool shop. In 1961, Pearl and Cleve returned to Wichita for a 50th anniversary celebration with older brother Earl and his wife Grace.
In his later years he kept a large vegetable garden, growing carrots, lettuce, beans, corn, rhubarb and other vegetables year-round in his back yard.
