William Whitney "Brazen Bill" Brazelton
Birth: unknown, USA
Death: Aug. 19, 1878
Pima County
Arizona, USA

Brazen Bill, outlaw-gunslinger, was described as "the most successful ‘single-handed' highway robber of his time." He grew up an orphan on San Francisco's Barbary Coast and attended public school for a time. By age 15 Bill had already killed his first man. During his short career, Bill Brazelton, a dexterous deadly shot, single-handedly robbed nine stagecoaches in Arizona and New Mexico. Once, after a stage holdup in New Mexico, Bill was chased by a posse into the hills near Silver City. There he managed to separate the pursers and began killing them off one at a time. The rest of the posse soon gave up the chase, allowing Bill to escape back into Arizona. In August 1877, Pima county sheriff Charles A. Shibell and a posse set up a trap for Brazen Bill near Tucson. When Bill showed up for a prearranged meeting with a confidant, the posse opened fire killing Bill on the spot. His body was taken to Tucson where it was put on display and photographed. Best accounts are that he was buried in the Old Tucson cemetery downtown, and then later moved to a mass grave in Evergreen cemetery. But that was not the end of the trail for Brazen Bill. To this day late night travelers along the old coach trails report the appearance of a ghostly being lurking in the shadows, perhaps waiting for the next stage to come along.
