On October 26,1776 German troops under General Knyphausen (Hessian of Von Knyphausen Fusiliers)were on an advanced patrol on White Plains Road in Tuckahoe,Westchester County,New York.When the Hessians were attacked by American Militia unit under the command of Capt.Samual Crawford.When the action was over six Hessians were killed.The main body of Von Knyphausens army moved on up White Plains Road.They buried there dead and moved on to fight in the Battle of White Plains,N.Y. In the early 70's construction workers discovered the remains of the Hessians when adding storm drains on White Plains Road.They were reburied in a common grave in the St.Pauls Church Cemetery in Mt.Vernon,N.Y.The small head stone reads, Here lies six Hessian killed in Tuckahoe,1776.
