Sgt 1st Class Carney was assigned to the 2nd BCT, 34th Infantry Division of the Iowa Army National Guard, Iowa. Carney was a gunner and died after the humvee he was riding in rolled over during convoy operations. Scott graduated in 1988 from Sheridan High School in Thornville, Ohio and enlisted in the Army in March 1989. In October 1999, he left active duty but because of his love for the military he joined the Iowa Army National Guard in December 2000. He attended Upper Iowa University where he earned an Associate's degree in 2003 and also took college courses through the University of Maryland. During his time in the military, he served in Germany and Korea. In February 2007, he was mobilized for Operation Enduring Freedom and the Global War on Terrorism. His unit provided advanced combat training to the Afghan National Army and Afghan Police. He will be posthumously awarded the following awards and decorations: Bronze Star and Afghanistan Campaign Medal. His great love was his wife, Jeni, and their twin sons – he enjoyed taking his boys fishing at Saylorville Lake. Scott was a great soldier and a great family man.
