Martha Marie Steinmann

Funeral services for Mrs. Martha Marie Steinmann, 77, wife of Gustav Steinmann of Ashton, were Saturday, Jan. 15, in the Ashton United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Steinmann, a resident of Ashton since 1922, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 1977, at the Ashton Memorial Hospital following a long illness.

She was born on August 3, 1899 in Uslar, Solling, Germany, the daughter of Karl and Frieda Jordan.

She spent her childhood in Germany and after graduating from school, she worked as a secretary until coming to America in January, 1922.

She lived in Ashton with her sister, Mrs. Homer Goebel, until her marriage to Gustav Steinmann May 14, 1922, at Ashton. He farmed in the Ashton area for 54 years.
They continued to live on the farm until the time of her death.

Mrs. Steinmann was member of the Ashton Methodist Church and was active in the Queen Esther Circle of the Church. She was a member of the Cloverleaf Rebekahs, serving as past Noble Grand and past Chaplain. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for 25 years. She returned to visit her native Germany in 1957 to reacquaint herself with the area that she spend as a child.

She leaves her husband; 4 daughters, Mrs. George [Eleanor] Glarborg of Hazelton, Mrs. Victor [Mabel] Marotz of Ashton, Mrs. Wayne [Caroline] Valentine of Missoula, Mont., and Mrs. James [Martha] Kuck of Idaho Falls; one son, Herbert Steinmann of Ashton; 18 grandchildren, and 8 great grandchildren.

She also leaves 3 sisters, Mrs. Henny Warnke of Ashton and Mrs. Frieda Norden and Mrs. Trudchen Gattermann, both of Germany.

The Rev Emmett Shortreed conducted the funeral services.
Speaker was Thomas Murdoch; life sketch, Brad Telford; Musical number, "Beyond the Sunset," by the Harmonettes; meditation, "The Nature of the Saints Rest," and the music number, "Peace I Leave With You," sung by Shirley Butler, Connie Lovgren and Erma Litton. Floral arrangements were by members of Cloverleaf Rebekah Lodge. Casket bearers were Bryan Kuck, Gary Marsden, Carl Glarborg, Mike Steinmann, Kerry Huntsman, and David Valentine.
