Son of Eli Easterwood and Mary Ann Trader Easterwood. Born in or near Hartford, Ohio County, Indiana, June 28, 1856. His father, Eli Easterwood, was a Civil War soldier killed in action June 15, 1864 in Battle of Gilgal Church / Lost Mountain, Georgia. In 1870, John lived with his widowed mother and sister in Rising Sun, Ohio County, Indiana.
In 1877, he married Mary Magdalena Hickner in Cleves, Ohio. They lived in Ohio and Ripley counties in southern Indiana before moving to Tipton County.
Children living to adulthood: Frances Regina (Lawhorn), Frank George, John Jr., Herman Bernard, and Estelle (Sister Mary Rose, Sisters of St. Joseph, Tipton).
