Staff Sgt. Nicholas Carnes of Dayton, Kentucky was a 2000 Dayton graduate where he played football. He joined the military when he was 17 years old and was a squad leader for a field artillery unit based out of Carrollton, Kentucky. He would have celebrated his first wedding anniversary with his wife on Sept. 19. Nick was due to return home in the next few weeks and had planned to work for him at B&B Riverboats when he returned home, and the company had big plans for him in the future. He planned to buy a farm and raise a family. He also loved country music and even sang with his dad's band occasionally. Nicholas is survived by his wife, his parents, two sisters and two nieces. He was awarded the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal and the Kentucky Distinguished Service Medal. He was 25. Nicholas is also honored at the Carroll County War Memorial The Post Office on Sixth Street in Dayton, Kentucky was dedicated in May 2009 to Nick and renamed in his honor.
