Daniel Barter was born on December 12, 1954 to Mr. & Mrs. Paul Barter. He was the 3rd youngest child of 7 siblings at the time of his disappearance. He was 4 years old, just 6 months away from his 5th birthday. He was last seen at his family's campsite in Perdido Bay, Alabama wearing only a pair of gray boxer shorts.
Over 2,000 people helped in the search for Danny, including more than 300 sailors and Marines from nearby military bases and 150 law enforcement officers and firemen. Civilian volunteers in bands of 25 teamed together and walked almost shoulder to shoulder over a 5 sq mile radius through woods and swamps in search of Danny. A skin diver volunteered to search the bottom of the bay for Danny. As a last resort, dozens of water holes were dynamited in an effort to bring up a body and large alligators in the area were hunted down and killed so stomach contents could be examined.
Law enforcement officials from Alabama, Florida and other states, using boats, fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, jeeps, horses and champion bloodhounds combed a five-square mile area in a search that lasted for more than a week before it was finally and reluctantly called off.
The disappearance made headlines in newspapers across the country.
Not one shred of evidence was ever found. In the 5 decades that have passed since the cute little boy disappeared, no remains were ever found, nor have any live sightings been reported.
The case has remained open, but no leads ever emerged. In 2008, investigators began a new push to solve the case with the prevailing theory being that Danny was abducted. Persons who have any information that might be helpful in solving this case are asked to contact Baldwin Co.
