While John's body was never recovered, John was presumed dead in 1879 as his father was granted his $8 a month pension retroactive to May, 1864. Previously he lived at the Head of the River, New Bedford, Massachusetts where other Wings lived.
Family requested a memorial stone be placed in the lot where his father, step-mother and sister are buried. This stone was approved by the VA in 2013 and placed here by the City of New Bedford. Stone was received and installed in October, 2013 - 149 years after his death. He is memorialized in this family plot.
A ship's carpenter by trade and a regimental carpenter when he enlisted at age 21. Re-enlisted as a Veteran Volunteer in December, 1863. Reported missing in battle, May 16, 1864 at Drury's Bluff.
Entry into the Regimental history of the Massachusetts 23rd reads:
Wing, John A. Co. D, 27. N. Bdfd. S. Carpr. Sing. Eurd. 20 Sept. '61. Reend. Killed Dys. Bff. 16 May, '64. See p. 195.
