Sim was the son of Hugh "Fred" and Vera (Owen) Blankenship. He was eleven months of age when he died at the home of his parents on Big Creek in extreme eastern Taney County near the community of Dit (also known as Nance).

A death certificate #28020 indicated the baby had suffered approximately one day with cholera infantum, an acute infectious disease of infancy, characterized by rapid emaciation and extreme prostration. Easily treatable today, diseases of this nature wreaked havoc among infants and toddlers of a century ago, especially in rural areas where medical care was scant at best.
