Hugh G. Fagan
CAMBRIDGE CITY, Ind. - Hugh Gene Fagan, age 85, of Cambridge City, died peacefully on Monday, May 2, 2011, at his residence in Cambridge City after a long illness.
He was born in Cambridge City on July, 31, 1925, to Hugh Bartine and Eva Roth Fagan. He married Betty Lucille Taylor on Sept. 21, 1947, and had lived most of his life in the Cambridge City area.
Gene was a 1943 graduate of Hagerstown High School, where he was president of Hagerstown Chapter of FFA. He had served in the U.S. Army. He was an elder at the Jacksonburg Christian Church and was a member of the Harrison Township Advisory Board, Harrison Township Farm Bureau and Wayne County DHIA.
He was a lifelong farmer and dairyman who loved the farm. He farmed briefly in Rush County before returning to Jacksonburg where he and Betty lived and farmed for 44 years. Retiring from dairy farming in 2005, he returned to his boyhood home and could often be seen working in the garden or riding the tractor to check his cows and care for his crops. He loved to work outdoors, hunt for mushrooms, pick raspberries and especially loved trips to Michigan to bring home peaches. He always enjoyed family gatherings and continued to farm with his sons and grandsons until his death.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Betty; children, Barb (Stan) Eastman and Jamie (Amy) Fagan all of Cambridge City; a daughter-in-law, Teresa Fagan of Connersville; sister, Joan (Haskell) Blackburn of Cambridge City; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Beth Elaine Fagan in 1957; a son, David Fagan in 2007; and two sisters, Gladys Murphy and Bernice Gray.`
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 6, 2011, at Waskom Capitol Hill Chapel in Cambridge City with Bruce Ross officiating. Burial will follow in Jacksonburg Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday, May 5, 2011, from 4-7 p.m.
